I've noticed the opposite of what others have mentioned. The backlight is low when in bright lighting. Medium in dark setting. Brightest in low indirect lighting. It's very different then a smart phone because it's not backlit. The eink itself has a reflective property and doesn't need backlighting when there's decent background lighting. Granted, I’m specifically referring to the actual Kindle vs an iPhone or iPad. Reading via the Kindle app, the Nook app or the iBooks app is basically the same experience “for me”.
